Hypnotizability as an adaptive trait
Santarcangelo, E. L. & Sebastiani, L. (2004). Hypnotizability as an adaptive trait. Contemporary Hypnosis, 21, 3-13. This paper reviews our studies on the hypnotizability/hypnosis-related modulation of the mind-body connection during relaxation and mental stress, considered as the extremes of the wakefulness cognitiveautonomic arousal.
The concept of relaxation is discussed according to the observation that similar self-reports of relaxation and autonomie states may correspond to different EEG patterns in low (Lows) and highly hypnotizable subjects (Highs). Results obtained during mental stress are discussed in the light of a possible adaptive role of hypnotic susceptibility as a natural protection against cardiovascular hazard; in fact, only Highs can actively suppress the cardiovascular responses evoked by a moderate mental stress. All together, findings show that the body can differentially act to similarly experienced relaxation and mental stress and suggest for hypnotizable individuals an evolutionary advantage.

Improving the performance in any given area most likely requires that you stop bad habits and strengthen the necessary parts of your brain and body. When someone is performing poorly they should realize that actually what they're doing is doing their poor performance at an expert level. This proves that they have the ability to achieve mastery. However, they are merely doing it in the wrong way.
Getting rid of an expertly performed bad habit is not easy. In fact the brain and body will resist any efforts to change. Additionally, such efforts will most certainly strengthen the hold that...
Even though during my military career I learned to jump out of perfectly good airplanes, I never quite got rid of a debilitating fear of heights until I started studying Neuro-Linguistic Programming and hypnotherapy. Despite the fact that I never refused a task involving heights, my military trainers noticed that I would have to use sheer willpower. During my NLP training, Clinton Clay, LCSW, a Huntsville, Alabama, master practitioner trainer, used a brief hypnosis technique. Now not only can I stand on ladders and look over the edge of high buildings, I also found that I could pursue my...
For many people, cigarette smoking began at an early age. Usually this habit starts during a person’s teen years although we have seen it start even earlier. Normally, peer pressure or the influence or the example of parents was somehow involved in the decision to smoke the first cigarette. Also, depending on a person’s age, they may have been influenced by advertising, which was legal at one time in America.
Once this “social reason” for smoking initiated the act, there are two basic reasons why the act of smoking became and addiction. First is the addictive nature of nicotine. Nicotine...
